UPDATE AFTER VET CONSULT

So, Lady strolled me back to the vet today, to find out the results of my blood test, and see the specialist. I have retinal atrophy and optic neuritis. I am not a candidate for surgery. This is it for me -I can't see. Lady has always done the typing for me, because my nails get stuck in the keyboard, but I am the author and editor. Who knows what she'll write if I don't proof it. The vet put me on steroids for three days to see if there is any improvement. He said I'll probably have an increase in appetite. Lady made me a grilled cheese sandwich today to try to cheer me up. I love grilled cheese! And she lets me have all the carrots I want. I mostly want them with hummus.
Lady is going to see my grandma and grandpa in two more weeks, so she is staying in town to help me adjust to my new way of life. It would be easier if I could hear better, and if I weren't so obstinate determined when we go out to take care of business. It's my walk, I lead- even if it means I walk in circles and bump into things. That's why she puts me in the stroller if we have to actually get somewhere.
We'd love advise from any other furrends who have gone through this. I'm fine butt Lady needs help.

  1. OMD! Marley! I have that very same thing going on. I was diagnosed with it about 4 years ago. The eye specialist I went to put me on medicine called Ocu-Glo and it really slowed down the progression of the disease but won't just make it go away. I'm about 90% blind now but can still see things at a distance. Just don't suddenly put something in front of me because I'll bump right into it. Fortunately I know the way around my big house really well. I can even find the 4 steps that lead down to my doggie door so I can still go outside by myself. Actually I'm doing great for being an "almost" blind dog. Just tell Mommy not to make any big changes in your house and you'll do just fine. My Mommy is a little bit worried too about when we move to a brand new house at the end of the year. I'll have to start learning my way around all over again. But I know with time and Mommy's help and help from the rest of my pack leading me around, I'll do just fine. I always follow brudder Max (DaUdderWeenie) around anyway. Guess big brothers come in handy once in a while. Mommy also had a Min Pin a few years ago who went completely blind almost overnight. Serena was terrified when it first happened but after a week or so, she completely settled down and accepted it and knew her way around the house so well that no one would even guess that she was completely blind. So you tell your Mommy that everything will be OK as long as you have each other.

....Amber pretty much said it all! It is a difficult transition as much for the 'help' as for the one undergoing the thing - but you absolutely do have each other and I don't doubt that coping mechanisms will fall into place as they are required. Keeping you on my POTP list. Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. We haven't had that problem....yet. But SHE worked with blind children for years and knows that they just adjust and don't even notice it. Others notice and worry, so we're sure you'll be okay. BUT, keep hitting things occasionally if it means grilled cheese! We'll add you to the prayer list.

    1. She thinks I don't notice the pill inside the cheese. I do. And I'll spit it out so she tries again with more cheese. I already take my thyroid meds with hummus. My Flexadin is ground up on my food. I'm wise to that, too. Right now i am still bumping, and Lady has a trip coming up, which means I will be somewhere else. More bumps. I hope Lady writes it in my care book to give me grilled cheese!

  4. We haven't had this problem either, but agree with the others that with time and patience I am sure all will work out.

  5. It's hard to see a pup get older and struggle. But maybe you should let your mom know the secret that we dogs just go with the flow and look for the joy in the moment.

  7. So sorry you are having problems right now. Remember when you were have trouble walking and the Lady got you a cart? You got over that and I know you can overcome this. Did the Lady receive the towels that our Mom sent? Love you Emmy and Cocoa

    1. Yes, I remember. She thought I'd be in handi-wheels furever, but I healed. Um, we'll check with the landlord to see if the package came. He left a sign on the door to take deliveries there. So kind of you!
